Students from across Buncombe County Schools (BCS), Asheville City Schools, and other surrounding schools recently gathered at A.C. Reynolds High School for a day filled with competition, celebration, and community during the Special Olympics presented by Buncombe County Parks and Recreation.

Athletes participated in a variety of events and activities while being cheered on by classmates, teachers, volunteers, and families. From races and field events to games and activities in Olympic Village, the day was centered around inclusion, encouragement, and fun. The event kicked off with a torch run from Smokey and the Pig on Charlotte Highway to R.L. Dalton stadium that included BCS Superintendent Dr. Rob Jackson, law enforcement members and other school officials.

The atmosphere throughout the campus was filled with excitement as athletes proudly represented their schools and showcased their determination and teamwork. Volunteers and staff members helped make the event special by cheering on competitors, assisting with activities and celebrating every accomplishment along the way. 

Students had the opportunity to build friendships, create memories and experience the joy of competition in a supportive environment. The event highlighted the importance of inclusion and ensuring every student has the opportunity to shine.

Buncombe County Parks and Recreation, along with community partners and school staff, helped create an unforgettable experience for athletes and families. The Special Olympics continue to be a cherished tradition that brings the community together while celebrating the abilities and achievements of every participant.
