Deaf & Hard of Hearing Education Program

Buncombe County Schools Deaf Education Program is a team of Teachers of the Deaf (TOD), Sign Language Interpreters, Language Facilitators, and an Educational Audiologist. The team provides services to students that are Deaf or Hard of Hearing.

Students that qualify receive a wide range of services depending on their individual needs. Some students use American Sign Language (ASL) or other manual languages as their mode of communication and have interpreters with them for their entire school experience, and others use oral language. Our TODs and our audiologist serve a very diverse group of students that have unique learning needs including hearing assistive technology (HAT).

Our student population is low incidence with high needs and BCS Deaf Ed strives to meet their unique learning needs and provide all services on the continuum. We help to bridge the gap for Deaf and Hard of Hearing students and their hearing peers, in pre-K through High School.
